Meeting Badminton's Thomas Cup

With the Finals of the 2016 Thomas Cup, due to be held today - 22nd May 2016 - between Indonesia & Denmark, I was so happy to be given the chance to hold that memorable trophy during my recent visit to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Head Office...

This iconic trophy, donated by Sir George Thomas, was once lifted by Wong Peng Soon & Company... In fact, Malaya were the first ever winners of this trophy!

I do hope that one day, our Singaporean shuttlers will once again lift this trophy aloft again! But till then, may the best team win today!

Visiting Sports Museums & NOCs whilst overseas

Whenever I'm overseas, I always make it a point to visit the local National Olympic Committee (NOC) or Sports Museums because it is always refreshing to see how different countries/sports associations showcase their respective sporting histories.

Learn from the best practices of others & widen one's world view - that's my motto!

Here are a couple of my favourite sports museums & galleries, that I've had the pleasure of visiting in early 2016:

1) Sports Museum in Bangkok, Thailand

Part Library & Part Museum, this amazing place is located within the National Stadium compound in downtown Bangkok.

Immaculately kept - various ribbons from the 5th Asian Games in 1966!

They even have a gallery of sports attires, through the ages, which was the inspiration for the SSA Exhibition Mannequins

Each piece of memorabilia is lovingly documented and stored - a labour of love!

2) Heritage Gallery at Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The FAM has a gallery that greets all visitors as they step into the FA's building. In my opinion, it is very well done and gives everyone a quick overview of the FAM's rich history:

The FA Cup, which the Lions XII last won in 2015, beating Kelantan 3-1!

Throwback Thursdays: Early SEA(P) Games Medals (1959 - 1969)

Here's an overview of the time periods which will be discussed in this post:

From 1959 to 1975, the biennial regional sporting event was known as the South East Asia Peninsular (SEAP) Games as it only involved countries located on the penisular. This included Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Cambodia, Laos & South Vietnam.

However, with the entry of Brunei, Indonesia & Philippines in 1977, the Games evolved into the South East Asia (SEA) Games that we know of today.

Timor Leste joined the SEA Games family in 2003.

These Games are organised under the auspices of the SEA Games Federation, which is based in Bangkok, Thailand.

Let's look at the early medals awarded to the winners... See any similarity?

Yes! Both appear not to have ribbons attached to them. Indeed, winner's medals only started coming with ribbons from the 3rd SEAP Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Before that, they were simply presented in boxes, as the second picture suggests...

Rangoon, Burma in 1961

Burma would not host the SEAP Games again until 2013, when they hosted the 27th SEA Games in their new capital, Naypidaw.

Much had changed since 1969 - the names of the country and its capital and even its flag. Still, all things considered, the Myanmarese hosted a superb Games and I was very lucky to have had the chance to experience the
famed Burmese hospitality!

Memorabilia from the Singapore Amateur Football Association (SAFA)

From 1892 to 1966, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), was known as the Singapore Amateur Football Association (SAFA). The FAS is the oldest FA in Asia, having being founded in 1892. It celebrates its 125th Birthday on 29th August 2017.

Let's take a look at the various logos of SAFA/FAS, through the ages:

This medal and pin are from the 1960s, possibly just after the name change.
Notice that blue has always been a
colour of choice for the FAS.

A SAFA Handbook from Season 1961. This handbook is something of a cross between an Annual Report and a Rulebook.

SAFA EXCO circa 1961

Front & Back views of two SAFA Medals.
The one on the right is from 1949, so this should rightfully be the oldest piece of football memorabilia that I own!
Notice that the bigger medal on the left, dated 18th May 1961, bears "Majulah Singapura" and this is because the Singapore Flag, Coat of Arms &
"Majulah Singapura" were inaugurated on
3 Dec 1959

The Oldest Football Souvenir Magazine that I own - 1953

I've always enjoyed football, ever since I was a young boy and it helped that I went to a primary school which was very well known for its footballing prowess...

Jin Tai Primary School (established 1982 but now defunct) used to be well known for its football team.

It was indeed an honour to don the yellow jersey and green shorts in 1992, even though it was just for a couple of matches.

Perhaps it was the inauspicious jersey number ( I wore #4) but Mum didnt really fancy her son playing football and so my footballing dreams came to naught. I should have kept that jersey!

Anyway, the oldest ever piece of football memorabilia that I possess is a Football Association of Malaya (FAM) Souvenir programme from the 27th HMS Malaya Cup Final between Penang & Singapore, which was played on Saturday, 22nd August 1953 at the Chinese Assembly Hall Ground in Ipoh, Perak!

Even though the final score was 3-2, in favour of Penang, this is still an amazing keepsake!

Sidenote: Just found out that the oldest souvenir programme kept in the RCLOS Section of our National Library dates back only to 1955 so mine (in private collection) pips theirs by 2 years 😆

This Souvenir Programme is 63 years old in 2016, nearly twice my age!

And 63 years later, in 2016, I got Chia Boon Leong aka Twinkletoes (also one of the last surving members of the 1953 squad)
to autograph the programme...

Chia Boon Leong now, still sprightly
at age 91!

Chia Boon Leong is also likely the oldest living Olympian in Singapore.
He represented China at the
1948 London Olympics

It was really fabulous to meet a Singapore football legend like Chia Boon Leong... #reallymademyday
